After arriving on Cincinnati’s campus Friday afternoon, it didn’t take Lackawanna College star linebacker Greg Blair very long to decide that he wanted to become a Bearcat. Shortly after Saturday’s spring scrimmage, the personable junior college “mike” linebacker informed the Cincinnati coaching staff of his decision and within a couple of hours the deal was sealed when Blair signed a letter-of –intent.
The sophomore talked about the reasons for his quick decision.
“I’ve just had a great time here,” said Blair. “My hosts were RJ (Reuben Johnson) and JK (Schaffer), and they have been great. RJ is one of the coolest dudes I’ve met, and Coach Jancek (UC linebacker coach) has been talking to me for some time. How he’s handled everything has just been the best. I just feel that I should be here. That feeling is in my gut that I should be a Bearcat.”
Blair’s older brother starred on the hardwood for his hometown Pitt Panthers, and DeJuan Blair is currently playing for the San Antonio Spurs. The younger Blair said the Panthers have recruited him along with the Miami Hurricanes, but not to the same degree as UC.
“Pitt has been talking to see since the season was over, but the contact wasn’t consistent,” he said. Miami of Florida contacted me about two weeks ago. They were sending a coach to one of my school’s spring practices, and he wanted to talk with me.”
The signing of Blair means all three of Lackawanna’s linebackers from 2010 will be playing football next year at a BCS institution. Josh Francis is already at West Virginia, and Fabby Desir The group helped Lackawanna in posting a 9-2 record last season including a 34-20 win over Ellsworth Community College in the Graphics Edge Bowl.
At 6-foot-2 and 243 pounds, the addition of Blair gives the Bearcats a true middle linebacker for the 2011 season. He will have three seasons to play two.
