Butch Jones Interview- Louisville

Cincinnati head football coach, Butch Jones, was kind enough to sit down for a video interview with Bearcat Lair after Tuesday’s practice session. The topics included the reasoning behind making a change in kickoffs, the quarterback play, game preparation for Louisville and the Cardinals themselves.

The Bearcats will play at Louisville on Friday night, and the game will be televised at 8 o’clock on ESPN.

    • Great access and a good interview. I'm sure Butch 'gets it'. Here''s hoping for a better result Friday night.

    • Lots of negative stuff this week. Thanks to Tim and Coach Jones for this. I know most, if not all of us, know that we are pretty blessed as football fans and supporters of UC to have this coaching staff. Got really good guys covering too imo.

    • The constant clanging sound was some of the young defensive linemen (Alex Pace and John Burt) were hitting the sled.

      Sorry for the background noise.

    • Love the hat Tim. I have one and my wife HATES it. She does not want to be seen with me with it on. One of my golfing friends says it makes me look like the Flyong Nun.

    • Tim, as always a great job getting the coach to spend the time to talk to you during this short week where all minutes are precious!
      Go Cats and beat Louisville!

    • Props, Tim, for a great interview, and please let him know we appreciate his spending time.

    • Fitz, Butch is pushing the young DT's. in fact, he had Brandon Mitchell and Alex Pace squared off in the "Circle of Life" drill today. (Two players square off as the team makes a circle around them.)

As far as scout team, I really don't pay a lot of attention to that, but I know they have been very pleased with the progress made by E. J. Junior, Corey Griffin and Joey Jones. They are also pleased with Chad West, Deyshawn Bond and Ryan Leahy on the O-line. I'm sure there are others too.

Bob, I love the hat. During a tailgate, another UC fan asked me where I got it because he wanted one, and since you also have one, there are actually three people in this thread that have one because Brian Johnson also has one.

Brian and Mitch, I will definitely pass along your appreciation to Coach Jones. So often coaches only hear the accusatory questions and know fans often question their intelligence, it's really helps when people appreciate the effort even after a loss. Believe it or not, your comment will mean a lot to CBJ.

Nice interview, Tim. Your site is the best.

I'm amazed about the hours those coaches put in. I remember Paul Brown sending Coach Sam Wyche home a lot of times demanding he get some sleep (back when the Bengals had a lot of success). Do you think these 16-18 hour days are that helpful? It seems to me that after a while sleep deprivation will set in and all these hours end up being counterproductive.

    • Awesome. In Butch we trust. This isn't just his job, it's his life. He is all in in all ways. He's as genuine as genuine gets.

    • AZ, no one will ever outwork Butch Jones.

His teams won't always win, but they will never get out worked.

I often worry about Butch's overall health. We've even discussed the need for him to occasionally take his mind away from his job by possibly golfing, especially in the offseason.

Canuck, this is why I say that I get disappointed when UC loses but never angry. I know how much blood, sweat and tears the players and coaches put into every game, and I get disappointed that they didn't get the chance to enjoy a win for one night before the grueling process starts again.

Talk about working late - Tim - that one was about 2 am. You are doing some work as well my friend.

I am golfing today - I will wear the hat - and display the C. Of note - two of the guys in my group do a game with me each year. I think you met Art. Mi amigo Senor Garcia - a real live Mexican (a great American success story) - is coming later this year.

As for Butch and golf - at the Spring Game outing he was at one of the par three holes playing some kind of game where we paid for a hit the green contest. My memory is that when our group went through he hit the green - a small island in a lake. My memory is my ball dribbled off the back right - so - Butch beat me on that hole.

My basic take away from the video was that anyone who works that hard had to be far more disappointed by the results Saturday night than me.

    • Tim, I agree and most all who post understand to some degree how relentless "our" coaches and players work to end up with a win on game day!! I think that when posting our comments certainly our frustration especially in a loss may be felt in what we type. Nevertheless, I agree we as a football program have grown into something special that is getting better every year. I have witnessed like many the tougher years for our team. I would definitely prefer where we are at today. Go BEARCATS and beat the CARDS.

    • It might just be me hearing the things I want to hear. But, I was very pleased with so many of the things that Butch said during that interview. They can certainly be "coach speak" and, if the right offer comes along, Butch may leave for another job. But I just love how he talks about the program and the team. To me, it seems like he is speaking long term and not just this season.

      "Top 10 program"
      "One full recruiting class away"

      Go Bearcats. Beat L'ville.

    • I heard the samethings you heard Fatboy52, I thought he was really excited about Greg Blair possibly getting another year. Things can change but I think he likes it here

    • UC is going to need some TV money to keep him. I hope they can make it close at least.

Are you kidding me? I love the sounds of football in the background! Brings back memories. Sounds like victory.

BDIAS, I have thought that to be part of the Whit plan from day 1. You can bank on the fact that the football and basketball staff will benefit from that money.
