Wednesday was the final practice at Camp Higher Ground. After practice coach Jones was asked about the progress the team has made since camp began.
Chris Moore is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a shoulder injury.
Let's get right into it with our latest Q&A.
Q. What was the biggest thing your team got out of camp?
A. First thing was to develop more of a physical presence. We are work in progress. We will see how far we have come in our first game. The next thing was to create depth and we still aren’t there yet. That will be an on going process throughout the course of the entire season. It’s not just looking at getting individuals ready for the first game. It’s where will they be game two, three, and four. Where will they be when we start the Big East Conference schedule? It will be an on going process. It’s about team development of our football team. From leadership to our team chemistry we have come a long way. We have been provided great leadership, not only by our seniors, but even our freshman class. Then we have execution. There are three areas obviously that concern you. Number one is tackling. How well of a tackling team are we going to be, we can’t simulate it everyday. You never know until you get into a real game situation. The next is special teams. How will our kickers react? We have a lot of individuals playing for the first time.
Q. Have you accomplished all the goals you set for your team at Higher Ground?
A. We still have some practices left on campus. It has been a very productive camp. We need to continue to develop depth. We do believe we are a much more physical football team, and mentally we throw a lot more at them. Our work volume has really increased. We have been able to push through things and accomplished a lot in training camp.
Q. What position do you feel has the most depth in right now?
A. Right now we have numbers. Its experience though, really none of our positions do we have great depth. That is something where we are at in the program right now. We understand that. The only way to address depth is through recruiting. We will continue to do that. The thing we have done this camp was making it a very intense and physical. We also came away from camp with very little injuries. Chris Moore has the most serious injury and will be out 4-6 weeks. Chris has a shoulder injury.
Q. Who is the vocal leader of your freshman class?
A. I think it’s a number of individuals. Brandon Mitchell is an individual who I have been extremely encouraged by. He works hard everyday; he gained the respect of his peers, and older teammates. I think it’s too early to tell yet. I do know this. The advantages of being out here are all these freshmen are in a bunkhouse together. There is no TV. They get to know each other on a more personal note. I have seen this class become extremely close.
