Good get for USF, I'm getting a little worried with all of the good coaches already being snatched up.

    BearcatDrew

  • Willie Taggart may end up being a good hire, but his coaching pedigree is pretty thin. He spent only 2 years outside of WKU and DI program.
    There are better canidates available.

None of this matters. It doesn't matter who we hire, how storied they are, or how many games they win. They will always leave, and UC will always be left out because we have a small fan base, can't raise money for athletics, can't fill a tiny stadium in a good year, can't improve our stadium and are in a pathetic conference.

  • Tressel, Jackson, Martin - top three.

Tressel knows how to win, won every where he's won, and would bring instant credibility. Regardless of the smoke around him, he wouldn't want to leave and if you were his OC or DC, you are the coach in waiting.

Jackson, the more I hear about him and his offense, the more I like the guy. Got a raw deal with Oakland and had that offense ticking. Would bring NFL credibility to the program. The downside is that if he sustains success, he's going back to the NFL. Seems like he is currently blackballed from HC at the the NFL level right now. The other would be can he be successful as a HC in college.

Martin - spread offense, very explosive. key would be getting a DC that knows how to win. KC might be a guy who he can bring in. Had a lot of success under Kelly and sustained success without Kelly. Won championships on the DII level.

Lembo and Combs would be ok hires, but wouldn't splash. I'm not sure if like a Kirby Smart or Chad Morris would be interested, but again, who is to say they wouldn't be great hires. Narduzzi worries me only, not because we wouldn't be good, our defense would excel, but it would be key to get an OC that can run an exciting offense. I will say this - there is no shortage of ex-coaches, OC or DC that want this job. Not with the fact that your next jobs are MSU, ND, and Tennessee. Again, not happy about that, but let's face it, we can use that as a selling point and should.

    DaMonkeyUC

  • I highly doubt Whit will use our stepping stone status as a selling point. The coaches we interview will already know that and that is probably one of the reasons they will be interested.

  • Would it make any sense to hire one of the coordinators (Bajakian or Jancek) or Coach Stripling as the next HC? I was thinking especially about Jancek, who recruited a lot of the Florida and Georgia kids. It would help keep our class intact.

I have always liked our staff a lot more than our most recent head man. Are any of them ready to be front and center? Promote Striping and bring Kerry back to replace Strinpling's spot (with reassignemtns a given) and now we are cookin with bacon.

  • Jim Tressel has to be the absolute top target, and for all the reasons already stated and then some.
The fact is that Tressel is 59 years old, the idea that he would leave for a better job is possible, but I do not think it is likely. He is an Ohio guy, and his dream job is/was Ohio State. He will never, ever be the head coach at Ohio State again, so you ask yourself what the next best job in Ohio is?
Going with a MAC guy again is an absolute mistake. All of the problems associated with UC (stepping stone program, fan support, conference realignment) would begin go away if Tressel was in fact the guy in my opinion. Have him give a solid 5 or 6 seasons to provide stability, name Kerry Coombs the head coach in waiting and defensive coordinator and things would go to the next level. UC gets exactly what they want and need and Tressel gets a shot at redemption and a chance to close his career on a high note.
Tressel does not also bring the baggage that a lot of people think he does. Everybody thought the Sports Illustrated article was going to blow the lid on Tressel and reveal him to be this horrible person, but it was mild at best. He is still very well respected, especially across the state of Ohio, and would crush it in recruiting. I'm not sure why people are so cautious to pursue this option, what are they afraid of? UC getting bad press? Geez, that certainly has never happened...

I am for it if he gets an exciting offensive coordinator. Running the ball will not win it anymore - I mean as the primary threat.

  • I think finding somebody in the mold of BK is much preferred over CBJ / MD, neither of whom inspired the fan base as much as BK, or seemed to relish the task of building the program like BK. CBJ talked a big rhetorical game, but he didn't get into the trenches like BK, and his cliche's often sounded hollow. I mean, they sounded absurd until we improved.

So, d2 championships aren't out of the question. Chuck Martin would be awesome, though BK waited patiently for him to join his staff at ND, and may pay more than we're willing to pay him close to what we would.

The guy at Duluth is awesome. If you wonder how that kind of 'risk' hire pans out, two good examples of great success are Chip Kelly and the old sweater vest himself.

From a pure, we need to make money for a while standpoint, tressel would do that. Insane interest and even some curiosity. But I'm not sure that Whit would go for it.

Tressel started running some spread packages during Troy Smith's senior year and definitely was running it full time during the Pryor years.

David Yost fits the mold. He is the former QB Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Missouri (he just resigned for "personal reasons".). He is considered an offensive guru and molded guys like Brad Smith, Chase Daniels and Blaine Gabbert. His version of the spread is in the mold of the Air Raid we see from WVU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M. Yost is a Dayton, OH native and graduated from Kent State. He knows Ohio, he was on Pinkel's staff at Toledo.

As the former assistant AD at Missouri, I have a feeling Whit knows his home phone number.

    CliftonAve

  • Not to be the downer, but has anyone outside of Bearcat Lair mentioned Tressel as even someone who would pick up the phone? Does he have legit interest in coaching and coaching UC? Is he going to stay at UC for a year to get the worst part of his sanctions over with then move on to a bigger school? He has to miss his teams first bowl they make with him as coach.

On a positive note. Tressel would fill the stadium. I think he would also be good for our chances to move to a better conference because he probably has connections in every conference.

I think this all comes down to 1. would he listen to UC. 2. Does UC want to deal with his sanctions. 3. Is UC willing to pay him what he will want.

  • I genuinely believe Tressel is an Ohio guy. I don't think he'd take another job. Especially with his age...I'd assume he'd be grateful for the opportunity an as someone mentioned before to put a last chapter on a solid coaching career. However this is all speculation. I'd say the real question is would UC even actually consider him? I think he'd love to coach again. We're the second best job in Ohio. Why not!?

    aves2806

  • We need someone who will instantly galvanize the fan base! A BK type who can sell the program and get butts in the seats and cash from the alums. . . We only have one or two years to make a great impression on the national scene and move up to one of the power 5 conferences... So this hire has to exite the casual UC fan, FAST! To me, we have to hire known and exciting commodity to make this transformation happen. Tressel has that ability! So does Petrino or what about Jay Gruden? Kerry C will not do that... Maybe he's our guy 3 years from now?

Yost could be a good fit. Wonder why he decided to bail this season though? I believe he is from Carrollton, Ohio which is close to the Canton - Massillon area. I used to call on banks up in that area many moons ago.

Your right. I was looking at his bio and was somehow inserting "West Carrollton" in my brain.

As far as why he resigned, I don't think anyone other than he and Gary Pinkel know. He cited personal reasons but Missouri struggled this year in the SEC. Yost has worked under Pinkel for 17 years, 12 at Missouri. He could just be ready for a change.
