An Interesting Article on Nippert

  • I saw this over on Yahoo... I know, I know, rivals is a competitor, but still I though it was interesting:

    I thought it was especially interesting to hear Whit talk about the plans to remodel Nippert...
    "Babcock said the school’s immediate focus is on renovating the west side of the stadium and adding premium seating.
    'We’ve started getting the ball rolling on plans and drawings and options and price,” he said. “We don’t have a timetable for it.'"

    I know in the Kelly years there was talk of "flipping" the stands, rebuilding the Reed-Shank Pavillion into the "home" stands along with a new press-box structure on the west side. Is this still alive?

  • Great to hear it being discussed. IMO something still MUST be done about the bottom 5 rows if Nippert is every gonna sell out consistently.

    Whit also mentioned this during an ESPN interview a few months ago, plans to expand Nippert and using money from the upcoming TV deal to do it.

  • I really hope this TV deal works out and gives us the extra income we need. I have heard that this is a pipe dream that the Big East will get top dollar for their college sports. NBC really needs to see it and realize that if they overpay schools will create a better product.

    I have seen him mention renovations, but i havent seen him mention expansion. IMO renovations are much more realistic than expansion, but maybe I just missed his expansion quotes.

  • i stand corrected. he does answer a questions about expansion in this interview although from the sounds of it the expansion would be more to just add premium seats as opposed to a full scale expansion of the stadium.

    How about plans to expand Nippert Stadium? Those are in the early stages, Babcock says, and predicated on two main factors -- fund-raising and incoming revenue from the new television deal the Big East is in line to receive. A portion of whatever Cincinnati gets from the new TV deal would go to the stadium expansion efforts.

    The expansion plans focus on the press box side of the stadium, where the hope is to increase premium seating and improve fan amenities. Babcock did not have a dollar figure on the cost associated with the expansion. "This is part of our vision, and it's something I'd like to do, but this television contract -- we have to get some closure for that."

    CINCINNATI - (AP) -- The University of Cincinnati has changed its philosophy about playing home games in Paul Brown Stadium.

    After a two-year experiment that included three games at the NFL stadium downtown, the Bearcats are returning to campus for 2012. They're playing seven home games at 35,000-seat Nippert Stadium, which coach Butch Jones and players prefer.

    Athletics director Whit Babcock told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he hasn't ruled out playing games at the Cincinnati Bengals' stadium in future years, but he's more inclined to revamp Nippert Stadium and play there. The Bearcats played Louisville and West Virginia at Paul Brown last season, drawing crowds of 40,000 and 48,000.

    Babcock says games at Paul Brown need to draw bigger crowds in order to make sense financially.

    Renovations are probably more important too, since many of the people who go put the "ergonomics" of the Nip pretty high on the complaint list. If all the people who go aren't satisfied with being there, how do we possibly think we can attract 10K more (or however many)?

  • True. Need to find a way to make 35k to 45k comfortable getting in and out and to the restrooms. It will sell out if we can accomplish that.

    The Big East and NBC have been talking for over a year so it's far from a pipedream.

  • The question isn't whether or not the BE and NBC can work a deal... The question is whether or not the (New-New) Big East will get "top dollar" for it's TV contract.

    Of course "top dollar" is a subjective and moving target. Just a year ago we were talking in hopeful terms about getting something that would make the ACC contract ($20 mil/school) "look silly." Now the ACC is renegotiating it's contract northward of where they "were." The Big XII is renegotiating it's contract up with incentives to expand. In other words, "top dollar" is always getting more expensive.

    And then there is the sad reality that the New-New Big East doesn't look much like the old New-Big East a year ago. WVU is already gone. Pitt and Cuse are on the way out (meaning that any new contract will not count them). Replacing them are Temple, Boise State, Memphis, San Diego State, SMU, and Houston. Oh wait, I forgot Central Florida. Whether these teams will deliver anything like the percieved drawing power of WVU, Pitt, and Cuse is yet to be fully answered. And of course, the new-new Big East has the same problems that haunted the Old-new Big East...the threat that another conference (or conferences) could raid the conference for what makes it the most marketable...

    I hpe the NBC thing comes through at a "top dollar" rate. But my limited business savvy says that you never pay full price for what you can get cheaper. NBC already has Notre Dame as their marquee product. The New-New Big East can provide filler material for days when the Irish aren't playing as well as 2nd tier games for the NBCSports channel, but just how much will that be worth to NBC?

    And ESPN has pretty much gutted the conference, so there's not much incentive for ESPN to get into a bidding war with NBC... So who's left? Fox??? Maybe. But there's not much reason for NBC to be aggressive and no recourse for the New-new Big East to try and drive the deal up.
