B1G done playing FCS teams

  • Interesting take, could mean more opportunities for teams like UC. Hope it doesn't mean all of the games have to be on the road though. Not sure how OSU will swing this, to get enough teams to come in without returning a game. They want as many home games as possible naturally.

Barry Alvarez says Big Ten won't schedule FCS teams - ESPN

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says Big Ten officials recently agreed to stop scheduling non-conference games against FCS programs.

  • A prudent move considering they are considering playing as many as 10 conference games.

On the other side of the coin with only 2 non-conference games... I'll be shocked if they play many home and home matchups with anyone. (except the occasional marquee opponent)
If that is the case I see no reason to ever play another Big 10 team again.
    (beyond our current contracts)
It does us no service to go play games without a return to Nippert.

There are plenty of willing MAC teams. Hell, even we have accommodated OSU in that same capacity more than enough times in the past.

  • The only non-conference games the B1G will play will be against "marquee" opponents. They are only going to give home and home series to the likes of USC (Cal not Carolina, well maybe), Texas, etc. Don't be surprised if we only play one more game against them.

    Go Cats. Beat Purdue.

Truth be told if any of them want to buy our scheduled games out against them I'd go ahead and take the money.
In my view there is no real value in playing them on their terms.

  • I think all FBS schools & conferences should do this. Let the FCS remain separate; that is why they are divided into two divisions to start with. Moreover, if a school does not have a shot at the Nationl Championship, they should be in a different division. If I was a recruit, I would rather play at a FCS school with a shot at a NC than a FBS school with the highest of hopes being a berth in the International Bowl.

Really depends on a lot more factors than just the chance to play in an NC game, but I see your point.

  • Surprising, considering they've had their hands full the past few seasons with MAC schools.

  • A couple of points...

Since college football is the only level of football that doesn't allow any kind of practice games/scrimmages, many schools use the FCS game at the beginning of the year for basically that purpose.

If all the FBS schools quit playing FCS institutions, I predict we'll see fewer bowl games because there won't be enough teams to qualify.

Great point tim, the ruling several years ago that allowed an FCS win to count opened that pandoras box. B1G trying to close it. Clearly would be fewer teams eligible. Most if not all 80 or so teams that played in bowl, played an FCS team. Many of those 6-6 teams would have ended up 5-7 and not eligible if they have to play FBS teams.

  • We will see fewer bowl games anyway. If you think there is low interest in many of the bowl games now, wait until the playoffs start.

Low level bowl games draw a bigger TV number than a Duke - NC basketball game. People just love football, and as long as there is sports betting those low level bowls will remain in tact. They can always lower the qualifying standards to get into one of those games. The cities that host them sure do want them to continue.
