Current Big East did pretty well, if you don't count the two that are leaving. Rutgers, USF, UCONN, and Temple all won even though they played poor opponents. Louisville plays a Kentucky team that the Big East needs Louisville to beat. We are seen as a bad enough conference and we can't have the team that everyone is predicting to be our champion losing to the worst team in the SEC.
The ACC has to be excited to be getting Syracuse and Pitt. Pitt loses badly to an FCS opponent and Syracuse loses to a bottom of the barrel Big 10 team.
Future Big East teams did pretty awful. Memphis lost to an FCS team. Houston loses pretty badly to Texas State. Boise loses close to MSU. Navy got trounced by Notre Dame. SDSU loses to Washington. UCF was the only future member so far to get a win, although it was over Akron. SMU gets to play Baylor tonight. Hopefully they do better then the rest.
I hope the rest of the year doesn't go this way. The Big East is going to be seen as distancing itself even further from the top 5 conferences if we add teams that are playing like that. I know this is just the first weekend of the season, but this couldn't be the bright future that the Big East was expecting when adding these teams.
I can't argue with anything you wrote.
Who beat Memphis?
Tennessee Martin. That's a really bad loss. That would put Memphis as the fourth best team in Tennessee. The Memphis quarterback went 12/28. That's pretty awful numbers for an FBS qb vs an FCS defense.
We know Boise will be fine, but the other teams either played teams who are at the bottom of a BCS conference or worse.
Navy is a team that always can pull an upset, but unlikely to be an overall competitive team, vying for the conf or knocking of ooc bigger teams. I assume folks think they are a good addition because of the national type draw from military base.
Memphis will IMO build quickly with the BE money and affiliation. I think they will have more corporate support going forward than we will. Following our fun bowl experience in Memphis - it is hard for me to not root for Memphis.
Does anyone know how Memphis did this year in the recruiting game?
They did very poorly. They were ranked 96th by 247 in 2012. 86th if you go by the composite. They are in the mid-80's this year. They had just three 3* players last year and the rest were 2*. Same this year. Being in the Big East will help, but it does make it difficult to recruit to a team that doesn't beat FCS opponents.
Why are we told to not judge Islam by the actions of a few extremists, but judge all gun owners by the actions of a few killers?
