Will UCF and the former Big East football schools be known as the "America 12?" BE law firm registered America12.org on Tuesday.
Not sure what I think about it if that is indeed the name. Don't really hate it or love it.
What a dumb name. CUSA was a much better variation on the same theme. Too bad they can't use it.
That name sucks. I would prefer embracing the "metro" idea by calling the league:
City Athletic League (CAL)
Big City League (BCL)
City Athletic Conference (CAC)

Isn't the goal to get to 14 teams when Navy joins in 2015?
Just keep praying the conference name is the ACC in a few years.
At least they can say that if you dont like us, then you arent American. Should be the slogan of the "America 12"
How about the The Big Lebowski.
At least it doesn't have the word "BIG" in it... All the proposed names with "Big" in them sounded...well...small to me.
If you're "Big" you don't have to say it.
Is that really the best that they could come up with? That is, (in my best Charles Barkley voice), Turrable!
Navy...IF THEY STILL COME...would be #11. Most speculation has been that Tulsa is "on-deck" to become #12. If Navy doesn't join in 2015, then presumably UMass or some other option would be added to get to 12.
Once again, I say we sell the name to FedEx or someone. Can you imagine what a company would pay to have it's name on every schools floor/field etc? 50MM/year? More? Why not in football? Everything else is sold in college sports and the best names are taken. FedEx Federation anyone?
could change in the future as well...we had Winston Cup, Nextel, Sprint...all were synonymous with racing.

Bring back The Metro...
The trouble with that, Nuke, is what happens when the corporate deal ends?
Take NASCAR for a moment... I'm old enough to remember when the "championship level" series WAS the "Winston Cup." Then, because of the anti-tobacco regulations, NASCAR had to change the name from "Winston Cup" to "Nextel" then when Nextel went belly-up to "Sprint Cup" (not to be confused with USAC "Sprint Car" category/class). Now NASCAR was able to ride that out, but it's hard to argue that the shifting name hasn't left the series somewhat less...significant...in it's wake.
Or take the issue with facilities... I don't even know what the ball-park up in Cleveland is called these days... It will always be "The Jake" to me (ie. Jacobs Field). Or what the ball-park out in San Fran is... I always call it "Pac Bell" even though it hasn't been "Pac Bell" forever. Part of the magic of a "Yankee Stadium" or "Camden Yard" is that they held their name for ages, even though "Yankee" IS the corporation.
Or for even a more tragic case, look what has happened in Los Angeles with the "Kodak Theatre" that was left in the lurch when Kodak went clear out of business and yet left their name on a building that suddenly is in search of a new benefactor.
My only point is that if you yoke yourself too closely to a corporate benefactor, there are risks as well as benefits.
Already posted my preference for BIG, but to your point, then why do two of the power conferences use the word BIG?
Sounds like the got input from the B1G on this one!
$50 to join - We need YOU!
Swing, I think the B10 is a relic of an earlier age. The "Big 12" name was chosen because of the "Big 6...8" trademark of the conference that was, in effect buying out the section of the defunct SWC. But even then, the rivalry was...in the Big 8's case at least...trying to "keep up with the Jones'" and stake their own claim that they were somehow "equal" to the "Big" schools out east. And, having grown up in Colorado (Big 8 territory), the Big 8 was laughingly known as "The Big 2 (Nebraska and Oklahoma U) and the Little Six."
And in the end, it's personal preference... There is nothing inherently "wrong" with the title "Big"... I just don't like it. But hey....
On a related note, there is a heckuva lot of chatter that Creighton will shortly be announced as the newest member of the (new) Big East... So, when the (old) Big East added Houston and SMU it was an atrocity and an abomination, but when the (new) Big East is going to add Saint Louis and Creighton it's not met with any scoffing...
I think you might be comparing different things here. Football is what drives the old Big East. Basketball and Catholicism is what drives the new Big East. In my mind, they're actually excellent fits for what they seem to be building.....
I prefer the "Metro 12".
I'm all in favor of calling it the Bearcat Conference since we win it every year!!
McMurphy just tweeted AmericaOne.org was registered by BE law firm.
What, a conference of 1? Is that like will the last school leaving please turn out the lights?

I don't disagree, actually. I think Creighton is an excellent fit in the new conference and I agree that BB is, obviously, driving the bus over there...
What I think is funny...literally funny... is that in the (old)BE and no doubt the new "America-whatever" conference, the critics couldn't wait to jump on literally anything. When the old conference tried to add TCU, people were crying that an "eastern" conference had no business adding a school from Ft. Worth, TX, because it "violated geography." But when the new "Big East" apparently is going to add a school from Omaha, NE, everyone is like "Well that makes perfect sense..."
And that doesn't even touch the rumored possibility that Gonzaga...located in the "eastern" (eastern for the State of Washington, at least) city of Spokane...is slated to join the new BE. But back to my original point...the "new" BE seems to be immune from criticism.
Back to our name dilemma, at least "America-1/10/12/14" leaves a huge amount of flexibility. If we had re-taken the name "Metro" then anytime the conference added a non-metro team then we would have heard it. America 1/10/12/14 allows us to add a Southern Miss. (who I'd prefer over Tulsa, FWIW) without any real trouble.
Sigh...just realized it would be abbreviated as A1...can't imagine how many steak sauce jokes will be forthcoming...Stick a fork in em...
Sets up a potential rivalry trophy game. The Battle for the Steak.
Dan and Moe have the battle for the steak already!...well...struggle for the steak...close enough...
