Crazy Rumor or Actual Truth?

  • The Boise piece of this rumor is interesting. I read somewhere that Boise was arguing for UC's entry in the Mountain West for football-only and minimal to no exit fees for leaving. Maybe Boise knows something and is trying to create a favorable relationship with UC. At a minimum I think it speaks to UC's media value. I have a hard time believing Boise would be a target, but if the Big 12 were able to get FSU, Clemson, Cincinnati, and Boise I would definitely call its expansion a success. Plus, by taking Boise and UC you effectively kill the Big East for good, and gut the Mountain West.

Or maybe to rumor is just another red herring.

I'm not saying we would be a bottom feeder, I meant more in terms of culture. Iowa St is just a bad fit for the Big XII culture and its why it doesn't generate buzz locally or nationally. Its a blah school even though they have a lot of positives.

Its also a big time recruiting hit. That is NOT our recruiting area and never will be. I am petrified of what would happen to our basketball recruiting once we lost our foothold in the east. A lot of our staple players in recent years have been from the New York area.

UC wasn't really a cultural fit in the BigEast either with only UofL as a similar institution in location, mission and fanbase. Pitt is a private turned public and much higher ranked academically, WVU is a state-wide school with much lower academics. Beyond those what did UC have in common with Villanova, Georgetown or Syracuse, etc.?

What does UC really have in common with UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, Miami or FSU? Nothing.

I think regional kids would love to play football in the Big12. It's better than the ACC for opponents and exposure.

UC has recruited Texas quite a bit in the past. Some of our best players came from Texas. Off of the top of my head Kenyon, Max and Kirkland were all from Texas. Neither Bob nor Frank had any trouble getting players to come to KState.

I'm not sure that East Coast kids wouldn't want to play in the Big12, they look to play for a coach more than a conference. I would guess at this juncture in Mic's career he can recruit nationwide.

Other than UConn and Temple, the Big East is no longer in our recruiting area for basketball either. I think the loss of Syracuse and the C7 schools are going to force Mick to rethink his recruiting strategy for the long term.

Regarding the B12--- culturally UC is more like the schools in the ACC than in the B12. Other than Texas and TCU, schools are in small Heartland towns like Ames, IA, Lubbock, TX, Stillwater, OK, Manhatten, KS, etc. The research those universiites conduct is generally in agriculture, cattle and mining. Iowa State fits in that culture. I think their biggest problem is they are overshadowed by the Texas and Oklahoma schools (AkA Texashoma schools). That being said, if UC is fortunate to have the option of the ACC or the B12 they have to strongly consider the fact the ACC will be significantly pillaged in the next 1-3 years.

The Boise piece is interesting because Moose stated that the big12 prefers Miami over Clemson. No mention of Boise. But that would be interesting indeed. I'd love to have a relationship with Boise regardless. I feel like ALL the major conferences will make moves rather quickly of one another.

That seems like it could be good news. Hopefully its not just a temporary C7 / MWC move.

I'm going to be honest, if this happens (meaning UC goes Big XII, moves home games to PBS), I will be borderline furious. UC would be sacrificing everything that makes them a special event in this city.

I honestly feel we could end up being another Iowa St in this scenario. Is that really what we as a university want our athletics to be? Just bland? We don't fit in the Big XII in any way, football wise, basketball wise, culture wise, recruiting wise. It should be considered only a last option move if its that or get left out. And we shouldn't be moving games downtown. In the OP's rumor scenario above, I would still rather be in the ACC after the defections than be the red headed step child of the Big XII with their inept leadership and Texas dominance.

I meant only the Big Games such as Oklamoma and Texas. Not all of them.

  • UC's football recruiting base is the catholic league and Ohio. Anything else is bonus. (Ohio has about 150 d1 athletes a year, with 2 top tier teams, versus NC with 40 d1 players and 4 top tier programs + Appalachian and ECU and soon charlotte)

Basketball is now an established top 25 program. Don't need to be playing on the east coast anymore to get those recruits, but we'll get games out there because we're established. 5 years ago we needed the big east for basketball, now not so much.

Nippert continues to get mad positive press around the country. That helps a lot. Nobody is talking up Wake or Duke's 30k stadiums. Nippert is the best facility in the BEast and top ten in the country - at only 35k. that speaks volumes. It makes for great TV.

Could you imagine playing OU or UT there? The TV that would create?

I can almost guarantee that neither of those teams will ever step foot in Nippert.

    michaelboston

  • I think that sounds likely, but in conference is a whole different can of worms than an out of conference game. There is no difference (I think) financially for UT if they play in PBS v. Nippert if it is a conference game. In fact, it adds a little spice to their schedule and creates great drama for tv.

I would think UC would be willing to play both at PBS, but until there's something a lot more substancial to report, it seems a waste of time to even debate it.

He mentioned Big Ten and SEC raiding the ACC. Which means the ACC will need us badly, If the Big 12 isn't active of course.

Really? He mentioned the SEC raiding the ACC? That is interesting...

  • This looks like a crazy rumor. B12 could have UC at any time if they wanted them.

If a few ACC schools are pried away, then they will just go after another ACC school. The only way UC ends up in the B12 is if almost all of the ACC teams hold pat. Then they will be forced to look at USF/UCF and UC & BYU. My guess is ACC if anything.

All the big conferences are playing chess and no one wants to be on the outside looking in.
All the WF/Baylor types are probably somewhat nervous.

'Nation, you're wrong here. Firstly, the B12 is an awesome conference and a money machine. Yes, it went through some shifting ( because of ESPN's money grab with UT setting up the Longhorn Network ( which is a bust BTW ), but now that the dust has cleared, they have solid schools in solid markets with solid fanbases and solid revenue streams. They have a new Commish who gets it. ( Personally, I don't know why there's so much B12 bashing on this site. Except for possibly the Oklahoma game ( which was fantastic ) most of you haven't been to a game in Austin, Ft Worth, Lawrence, Manhattan, Waco, or Ames. ) Trust me, they're terrific college environments. The B12 brand is alive and thriving. Those schools and communities have character. ( much like PSU in State College ) . For some unknown reason y'all think that the B12 is an impotent conference that's asleep at the wheel. You're wrong. Yes, they cover America's placid heartland, but that doesn't mean they're not paddling like hell below the surface. Yes, UT/OU are the bellcows ( pun intended ), but there's two in every conference. USC/ORE in the PAC12, OSU/MI in the B10, FSU/VT in the ACC. In every bellcurve you have your A,B and C players. Even within your A players, you have A, B, C players. In the B12, that mix has changed over the past decade to elevate Oklahoma State, Baylor, TT and even KS under Mangione. There is no foregone conclusion that it's just Texas and then the inconsequential "rest" all the time. That's just wrong.
If UC were to play in the B12, we'd be in the top tier in BB, although UT, KS, KSU, BU, OU and even OSU ( during the Sutton years ) are all typically formidable programs.
If UC were to play FB in the B12, we'd play every game at Nippert except for possibly one game a year - when UT or OU visited. All others would be played in a sold out Nippert. ( BU, KS, TCU, KSU, TT, ISU ) are all between 45 and 54 K . Our stadium size doesn't affect how the B12 looks at us. ( except the visiting teams will want 3-5K seats, and even then ISU, TT, KS, and KSU, are unlikely to use them all ). We'd get a B12 TV cut, and the rest of the revenue stream would be up to us.
If UC were in the B12, just think of the bowl game tie-ins, the occaisonal game at Cowboys Stadium, the TV coverage, the B12 BB Tournament, the B12 Baseball and Softball competition, the B12 tennis and golf competition, and roadtrips to Austin, Dallas, Kansas City, and Morgantown.
If UC were in the B12, just think of the recruiting opportunities in all sports. Texas population is 50 Million. (that's more than all of Canada ) . That my friends, is fishing in a stocked pond.
If UC were in the B12 and hosting Texas or OU or TCU or KSU, don't you think it might just wake up our city and wake up our ambivalent Bearcat Nation ? Hell yes it would.
If UC were in the B12 we wouldn't be a red-headed step child. That's just your insecurity, inferiority, and woe-is-me coming out. So, let me get this straight.....you want to be in a Big Boy league, but you want it to be Small Boy enough so you can win it ? Really ?
I say let's go get in the best league, make $20M a year, and swim with the sharks. I'm sick of being a minnow.

I also have to believe the staff is telling the recruits something about where we are headed or there is no way we get in with some of these recruits. I know relationships mean alot, but no kid that is any good wants to play in the conference of misfit toys.

"no kid that is any good wants to play in the conference of misfit toys".

Pretty broad statement in my opinion. There is lots of talent out there. Some get overlooked, some develop later, some want to see the field sooner, and some want to go to UC (believe it or not). We are a program now!

Yes, the Big12 could have UC at anytime if they want them.

But if the Big12 picks off a couple of ACC teams as rumored (FSU, Clemson, whoever), then the ACC will likely fill an open slot with UC.

So if long term, the Big12 would like to have UC in the fold, they might have to act proactively sooner rather than to secure UC before the ACC invites UC. If the ACC acts first and UC accepts the invite, UC might have a huge exit fee to pay if the Big12 came calling at a later date.

NBE is the "conference of misfit toys."

Where the NBE stands right now, there aren't going to be a bunch of quality recruits who would consider playing in it if they have Power 5 conference options. Maybe some, who like UC for other reasons like you state. But in general, only those without other options will likely give UC a listen which is why it is imperative that UC gets invited into the Power 5.
