UC wasn't really a cultural fit in the BigEast either with only UofL as a similar institution in location, mission and fanbase. Pitt is a private turned public and much higher ranked academically, WVU is a state-wide school with much lower academics. Beyond those what did UC have in common with Villanova, Georgetown or Syracuse, etc.?

What does UC really have in common with UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, Miami or FSU? Nothing.

I think regional kids would love to play football in the Big12. It's better than the ACC for opponents and exposure.

UC has recruited Texas quite a bit in the past. Some of our best players came from Texas. Off of the top of my head Kenyon, Max and Kirkland were all from Texas. Neither Bob nor Frank had any trouble getting players to come to KState.

I'm not sure that East Coast kids wouldn't want to play in the Big12, they look to play for a coach more than a conference. I would guess at this juncture in Mic's career he can recruit nationwide.

    Entirely correct ^.

Check out the BB rosters of KS, UT, KSU, Baylor, OSU, and OU. Laced with East Coast talent.

To say that we have to be "culturally congruent " with schools in a conference is ridiculous. You think WVU and Baylor are congruent.? You think Washington and Arizona State are congruent ? You think Northwestern and Michigan State are congruent ? You think Duke and Miami are congruent ? How about Hawaii and Southern Miss ? - that's hogwash.

I'm going to be honest, if this happens, meaning UC goes Big XII.....In the OP's rumor scenario above, I would still rather be in the ACC after the defections than be the red headed step child of the Big XII with their inept leadership and Texas dominance.

'Nation, didn't you say this ? ^ . That clearly implies you'd rather play in a Smaller Big Boy League than in the B12. You say you'd rather play in a defected ( diluted ) ACC than the B12. ? Maybe I misread / misunderstood this ( and if I did I'm sorry ) , but it sounds to me that you'd rather play in a weakened ACC because you're afraid of Texas dominance in the B12 and you don't want to be the red-haired ( second tiered ) stepchild in the B12. Just sounds to me like you're saying you don't want to be Iowa State. All I'm saying is that if we join the B12 we're not gonna be. We shouldn't NOT join the B12 because we're scared of being mediocre. Let's do the exact opposite - let's join because we want to be the best in the best league that wants us.

UC leadership has emphatically stated over the past 120 days that they're set on getting us in the absolute best possible position they can, and they won't rest until they do. For my money ( and ESPN /Fox's ) that's the $ 24 M per year of the B12. You get that dough and you can compete with anyone. ( we might be red-headed going in, but we'll be beautiful blondes pretty damn quick )

  • Give me a DAMN major conference BIG anything except East and the rest will work out. I would attend a game at NIPPERT, PBS, a CORNFIELD, ANYWHERE!!!! Finally would you rather be an Iowa State in the Big 12 or Bowling Green in MAC or Tulsa or East or West Carolina. This city and big business has not been utilized to nearly the same extent as Louisville or Memphis for example and give us the seat at any of the BIG's table and then it is our own fault if we are Iowa State in the Big 12 or Iowa or Minnesota in the Big whatever it is being called.

    ucdoc

  • Ucdoc, that's what I'm talking about! Who cares which one just as long as it is one of the Big 5 and gives us a chance to compete.

I can see what you thought I meant, but what I was really trying to say was that I would rather be in the ACC after 1 or 2 defections (likely to the B1G) than the Big 12. I'm not afraid of Georgia Tech + another to the B1G.

And I'm not afraid of Texas' athletic dominance...because quite frankly, they don't have any. Their basketball team has been struggling for a few years now, ever since Durant left. Their football team is far from dominant.

The Iowa State comment I could easily see being mis-interpreted. I can see you disagree, but the comment was meant as I don't want to be Iowa St in the sense I see it as a bad culture fit that isn't able to generate local interest. That state is dominated by Iowa because of the culture of the state and the conference they are in.

What I am concerned with is their overly-selfish attitude and their dominance in B12 politics. Every school is selfish, but they are selfish to an actual fault. Their attitude is one that not another person outside their organization can help them in any way. They have no concept of the value of a conference. Because if Texas up and decides they want to be independent or want to join another conference, they can do it in a heartbeat and the B12 will be done as a major entity because of the repercussions that follow.

I'm not scared of a big conference. I would have no problem being invited to the SEC (though as I understand will never happen), in fact I would love that. I would have no problem being invited to the B1G (will likely never happen). I'm just trying to think 10 years down the road and I believe UC in the ACC minus Gtech and BC/Virginia is the best overall scenario for the entire university. I believe the school itself and not just the athletics could be an incredible national player in the ACC. If it were to being severely watered down, then it would obviously be time to re-evaluate things.

In the end, we are both UC fans and we both want the same thing, whats best for the University of Cincinnati. We can always agree on that.

Agree. All one has to look at in the B12 is the success Kansas State has had in football. Kansas State is out in the middle of nowhere, resides in a state with very little homegrown talent that forces them to rely on JUCOs, plays second fiddle in their own state to Kansas, has mediocre academics, a stadium closer in size to Nippert than Texas/Oklahoma, has one of the smaller budgets in the B12 but yet---- they have beaten Texas on the field for the past six years running and has competed in BCS and other top bowls. If KSU can do this in the B12, so can UC.

Pfftt... if the ACC just lost a BC and Virginia that would be great. Unfortunately, I fear they are going to have more than just 2 defections and the schools leaving are going to be the bigger dogs that we would want to play like FSU, VT, Miami, etc.

I agree with what you are saying though... UC does have a lot in common with the ACC schools and in an ideal world we would be there. We certainly could still be there even after some defections and that would be better than we currently are. However, if UC has the option of looking at the B12 they have to really think hard about passing it up in hopes of landing in an ideal ACC.

I think people are really misinterpreting my argument.

By NO means am I saying we should turn down an invitation to the Big XII if given the invite tomorrow in order to wait on the ACC. I am simply arguing what I think is better for the university as a whole over the long term if UC is given a choice between the two which is an unlikely scenario.

It has been repeated on multiple occasions......the renovation had absolutely NOTHING to do with conference realignment. Been in the works for years, needed to be renovated regardless. We are a perfect for the ACC but it depends on the Maryland lawsuit over the $50 mil exit fee. The Big 12 needs to expand but who knows if they will. Just throwing it out there.

You should go to one of the many meetings UC has been having with business leaders, because they consistently say the expansion of Nippert is tied to getting in a major conference.

My guess is VTech and NC to SEC, then GTech and UVA to BIG.
