If the Bearcats are to win the Big East Conference in 2011, there are five keys.
Great topic for an off-week.
I think you nailed it. Injuries seem to be the biggest key. It comes down to:
- Who else can we count on at corner besides Drane/Cheatham?
- How long will Hooey be on the shelf?
Zach is pretty much concern 1A.
If these two happen, the rest of the points take care of themselves. I have supreme confidence that we'll continue to stuff the running game of our opponents, so I don't think that is a big concern.
One key that wasn't mentioned that I think we REALLY have to keep positive is our turnover margin, these last few games it has slowly diminished after such a great start. We are getting the turnovers but we keep giving it back!
i think butch may be in a tough spot wioth regards to the corner position. unless i am mistaken, from reading between the lines earlier this year trenier orr was probably the best looking corner beyond Battle, Cheatham and Drane.
Now that Battle is gone do you burn Orr's redshirt year or do you plug in a guy like Witty who may not be as good in order to preserve the redshirt.
Last time I made a negative comment about Zach I was bumped down to a 3 star. The truth is that Zach has some limitations due to his lack of height and somewhat average arm strength.
Hopefully he finds a way to cut down on the mistakes without sacrificing his production.
Great summary. I would add the need to avoid early mistakes. Was it last year we fumbled the opening ko at WVU? My memory is that it all accelerated down hill from there.
If we are close in Q3 I am confident of our chances.
So far the excitement of this year is all I hoped for.
FWIW - I met a UC grad at the gym today because I was wearing UC gear.
Spot on. Good article.
As always-on point and insightful; but you raise the questions but aren't supplying the info
Just how banged up is the line; is Hooey going to be back at tackle, can Rueben step up and fill some shoes in the d backfield; do we have it in us to be a little more ball control and shorten the game and take some pressure off both the the d and the o's need to score every possession in the 2nd half.
We can't always expect big plays to pull it out.
Good stuff as usual, Tim! Thanks!
Here are my five keys (guaranteed to win the BE if we can accomplish):
1) Beat Pitt
2) Beat WVU
3) Beat Syracuse
4) Beat Rutgers
5) Beat UConn

The defense seems to be getting better but we need more consistency from the offense.
I definitely think that more consistency from the kicking game needs to be added to this list. It's just a matter of time before that comes back to bite us.
I would add the following, better play calling. To me our QB looks handcuffed at times. Let's throw down field a little earlier in the game to loosen the Defense up a little.
