If CBJ goes, Narduzzi, Coombs, Diaco.....

  • It appears that CBJ is interviewing and there is a real prospect he might leave. I hope he stays as is he a good FB guy, a good administrator and good at PR (CRITICAL FOR UC JOB). If he does go, would UC have any interest in Narduzzi, Diaco or Coombs as potential replacements. All former UC defensive coaches. Diaco and Narduzzi enjoy solid reputations as coordinators. Until his departure to OSU, many viewed Coombs as the most valuable member of the coaching staff. Last two assistants/coordinators were Minter and D'Antonio. Minter coached for long time with moderate success. Good FB guy but not HC timber and not good at PR. D'Antonio is a very good FB coach but did not have the PR skills needed for this job.
UC may have to look at assistant coach route with competition existing foches on the rise (Dykes, Doeren, Hazell, Taggart, McIntyre, Andersen).

Does he have any past head coaching experience?
I already have season tickets however depending on where your seats are located maybe I could buy yours as my being a bearcat fan and supporter isn't predicated on whomever is/isn't hired to be the new coach.

    Ditto on Combs. No.
The ACC and Big12 would laugh at UC for making such a little time hire.

You don't hire a guy based on the fact you think he won't leave. That's a stupid criteria. You hire a guy that will win.

BTW he already did leave for tOSU so I don't even think he can play the "hire me I won't leave card."

  • What about the Toledo coach and his staff.

Based on? His current defense is #1 in scoring defense, #4 in rushing defense, #21 in fewest passing yards, and #12 in pass efficiency defense. I wonder what would have happened if he and BK had stayed at UC???

That's who I would take a long hard look at, I believe his name is Campbell. I would look at him as well as the Kent State coach. I would also look at current coaches on the staff such as coach Elder, he has strong recruiting skills, is from Sycamore, and seems to be good solid coach no matter what position he is coaching.

I'd like to think most coaches would enjoy having a bio that said 'former assistant under Brian Kelly, Butch Jones, and Urban Meyer.' Each of these guys wanted to work with Coombs. There is nothing laughable about that.

I have no idea what the future holds for Coach Coombs. However, if you spent 5 minutes around him and his positive energy, you would know exactly why he is a winner.

Not that I'm saying I think Coombs should be a candidate, but, to counter your argument:

An EXTREMELY similar situation occurred with our current head basketball coach. There are some differences, BUT, he went to another program (a rival program in UofL) to gain some more experience as an assistant and when the time came he came back. It wasn't smooth, all things considered and some harbored ill feelings towards him even after he was hired as head coach for leaving but it helped him in the long run learning from one of the best in the business and because of that it's helped UC in the long run.

    Just a little perspective.

Ultimately I'm extremely confident in our leadership at the top level right now. That's why I'm not too concerned about any of this, regardless of what CBJ decides to do.

He was fired at NCST after not being able to win once Philip Rivers left. He was just 15-20 after Rivers went pro. I really don't want someone who has already been a failure once. He finished his head coaching career with 7 straight losses and losses to Akron and East Carolina. I think there would be more people upset about Amato getting hired then people who would be happy.

Cronin did become a head coach and get his team to the NCAA tourney.

  • I wasn't going to start a thread about this, but I did read on other sites that Narduzzi wants to be a head coach and if the Cincinnati job would open up he would want the job. I'd take Narduzzi, but I'm not sure UC would want to go down the same road they've already been. Hiring a Big 10 defensive coordinator already bit UC once with Dantonio. Hiring Narduzzi would probably just keep UC on the merry-go-round. If Narduzzi has two or three successful seasons he would probably move on.

  • NIU guy gone, IMO the Toledo guy. Young, spread offense, maybe the conference stuff still works out and he stays to build a program under his name. Nothing wrong with hoping.

True. Which is part of the reason why I do not think Coombs is a viable candidate right now. Just making the point that because he left while an assistant doesn't necessarily mean he would look to jump ship as head coach. Coach Coombs may actually be BETTER in a head coaching position than as a secondary head coach- whether it's been because of personnel or bad breaks or lack of time to install his techniques and systems his secondaries have not performed at a very high level... but he seems to have all the right characteristics for a more broad encompassing position such as HC.

You can't limit yourself because someone in a similar situation left. Using your analysis, we shouldn't hire the coach from Toledo or Kent either, because we have had two former MAC coaches leave us to go elsewhere.

And, if that meant we won another 2 out 3 conference championships, I can live with that.

Exactly.... I would be one of the people very upset if we were to hire Amato. I don't want a coach who has been fired. I want an up and coming coach who is good with recruiting and runs the spread offense.
