  • Where did this kid come in contact with the Sex Offender? Sounds like there is more going on at the recruiting trip than football.

Nothing new in that statement, just check the headlines of the past!

Wow. The most telling, and damaging, was this:

" A text message also was sent to OSU athletes, warning them about Waugh and directing them how to block his text and Twitter messages, which he had sent to numerous players.

According to a report on The Lantern, Ohio State's student newspaper, Archie's email contained an Internet link to a March 19, 2008, Daily Independent in Ashland, Ky., report about Waugh entering guilty pleas to five counts of "possession of matter portraying sexual performances by minors." "

No response from OSU. And the Ohio State fans, of course, were ripping the recruit and not the sex offender. Amazing.

    Todd .....lest we forget?

And Just for purposes of disclosure, and integrity of this site; that we are not that far removed from the 2010 season whereas we had a very good player by the same last name whose dad was a very recognized alum/player at OSU..

Could some one just air it out that he, or his father is not in any form, or any way even close in association with, or to this Thread/article!

    Thanks

It isn't. The person in question is 31 years old. Too old to be Marcus, too young to be Marcus' father.

The age of the offender is in the article Todd linked.

  • I don't get why this is OSU's fault. They have a million fans, one of them is bound to be a sex offending weirdo. Everyone is acting like OSU set this guy up on a date with recruits. What am I missing?

Nothing. It's not tOSU's fault at all. And I loathe tOSU. This is all on some nutjob fan and the culture that exists where people tweet to recruits and try to make themselves a part of the story.

  • To me, the issue is that parents should be able to send their kid on a visit to these schools without worrying that their son will come into contact with a sex offender at the school.

From what I can tell its not like it was a happenchance meeting off campus somewhere. This was at the spring game. I can understand how a parent would be upset that through ohio state this guy was able to come into contact with their son.

I agree with you, X. This is the point. And it is OSU's fault. They let a convicted sex offender get close enough to a recruit to get a picture taken during a recruiting visit. Even on "unofficial" visits kids are relatively well supervised. This guy got close because the OSU folks let him.

On an unofficial visit, the supervision isn't as high as you'd think. This would be more on his parents. There's something not right with that family judging by the way they talk. You're quick to blame it on OSU, but you'd be singing a different tune had it been UC.

If a convicted sex offender tweeted one of our football commits right now, and then said sex offender bumped into said recruit somewhere in the city and asked for a picture, explain to me 1) How the school could stop that and 2) How would they stop that from happing again once that kid is in school? Seriously, who at UC would notice? No one can see what anyone tweets to that kid and that kid has no way of knowing the person is a sex offender and whether or not he should contact someone.

This could happen so easily right here in our own backyard. I'm hesitant to point a finger at OSU for this. None of it is there fault. Zero.

Agreed. As much as I'm loathe to defend Ohio State, you can't blame them for this one. In my mind, this is part of an increasing issue of social media and privacy for student-athletes (actually, high school kids). It's all very creepy.

I agree. The accessibility Twitter and Facebook give fans to their favorite players can be good, but also scary. This is why it's scary. It allows people like this to get so close to children (or young adults).

It's just so hard to police. That's why no one gets in trouble for urging a recruit to choose their school via Twitter. It's so hard to follow. If someone sends a kid a message on Facebook to his inbox, no one at the school has any way to read the message and identify the problem unless the child shows them the message. And if anyone thinks OSU knowingly allowed this guy to get near a recruit they're nuts. Ohio State issued a statement, but that was just a token. Not their fault.

  • I wonder if it is a parole violation for creep to tweet an underage kid or if it has to be contact.

The guy is back in jail for violating his parole due to this incident.

I also don't see how OSU is at fault here as much as I hate them. This could happen anywhere, it wasn't like Urban Meyer had the guy laced with field passes or in the locker room.
