Ohio State wants to invade

  • Lot of talk out this afternoon that, with Ohio Stadium under renovation next year, Ohio State wants to hold its spring game in 2013 at Paul Brown Stadium.

So they buy their way out of playing UC down here, but now want to play with themselves (sorry) in our town? No deal. I just read yesterday the county is facing a $27 million budget shortfall for next year. Ohio State can come down here for it's spring game -- rental price for PBS will be $27 million.

Ohio State's spring football game might be played at Paul Brown Stadium in 2013. Ohio Stadium is under renovation..talks are taking place.

  • That's the rumor. It is being discussed in Buckeye circles as well. Mike Brown's love for the Buckeyes is no secret and the county needs the revenue to make up for the big hole they are facing. The sad thing is it will sell out and UC will probably play in fron of a 5,000 people at their spring game at Nippert. You'll get enough locals combined with people driving in from Dayton, Columbus and the rest of Ohio.

  • Surprised to see this tweet:

    Lance McAlister ‏@LanceMcAlister
I say close the borders to the Buckeyes. Why give them a 3 hour recruiting platform with a spring game in Cincy? Tell 'em to play in Canton.

  • Mcalister is an idiot. Who exactly does he want to close the borders? The bengals have no reason to do so as they aren't associated with UC and should be looking at this with regards to whether or not it will benefit them.

The bearcats have no vway of cclosing the border as they have no control over what goes on at PBS.

Lance is the same guy who wanted to charhe $10 a month for twitter and put netting up in the outfield at gabp to make it harder to hit homers. Dude gets more ridiculous as time goes on.

  • PBS is free to do what they want. Yeah I think it's stupid but my opinion doesn't matter.

Someone start a money pot to feature a giant Cincy banner on a building in the banks as a nice welcoming message.

Mo Egger's now saying the Bengals have no obligation to UC.

IMO the two personalities are speaking both sides of the debate to drum up callers.

The County has zero say in what the Bengals can do, and the Bengals are done paying rent @pbs. They have the County by the balls.
The bad deal was the lease language.

  • I sorta feel like this is a shot at UC to even bring this up...Ohio State has it's roots in Cleveland, and the rest of the state. They could easily go North, but instead they want to come to the only other city in Ohio with a BCS team. For what? To show how powerful they are?

You want to come play in PBS? Fine, COME PLAY US! megaphone

Oh wait...your probably scared we will finish the game this time and WIN! I'll never forget 1st and 10 at the 15 yard line, going in for the win...and we drop 3 passes in a row and Gino throws an INT. banghead

  • At first I was kind of irritated about this. But Mo Egger is right, we can't worry about why tOSU is doing. We need to worry about selling out nippert before we start worrying about tOSU using PBS for a practice game in April. So what if it's a recruiting advantage? We aren't recruiting the same kids for the most part. I hate our place in the college football landscape but it is what it is. We can either accept our limitations and try to remedy any shortcomings, or continue to get upset by stuff that truly doesn't impact us.

This. People in Cincinnati want to protest--- protest by buying and showing up to UC home football games, close road games (UofL, Miami, etc.), bowl games and become UCAT members.

  • My interpretation was it's a move to UC to say, "Know your place, and now get back in line."

It's pointless any other way. They already have huge recruiting advantages statewide, and now have Kerry Coombs to make sure Cincinnati is well tended to. They sure don't need to come down here to increase demand among the locals for tickets to their games.

If they go through with this, UC needs to launch a campaign challenging our fans to fill Nippert to overflowing for our game, as an answer to this challenge. We need to turn this into a positive.

As for the Bengals, it's time for the Empire to Strike Back when it comes to that sweetheart deal they got on the lease for PBS. The county is in a huge hole. Portune already proposed a sizable ticket tax, as I recall. The commissioners ought to put a $10 per ticket pro sports tax in place in August, and then repeal it in January. Let the Bengals through their fans indirectly pay back about $6 million of the shortfall, a lot of which wouldn't exist in the first place if the Bengals weren't hijacking the county through that deal.

Yep, and instead of just sending an email to UCATS members, they need to put this campaign in the Cincinnati Enquirer, on TV and on the radio where the critical mass is.

  • Their spring game will sell out. Let them have it here and let everyone from Columbus come spend money in downtown Cincinnati.

  • If Ohio State, feels it needs to come to Cincinnati to host it's spring game. I take that as a sign that they feel threatened by the rise of UC Football.

As one person pointed out. They could readily host the spring game at Columbus Crew Stadium, right there. However, OSU realizes, this is an opportunity to move a meaningless practice game, and make it a huge spectacle. It is a brilliant move on OSU's end. You have to respect they are not idiots.

On another note. A huge billboard that says "Kerry Coombs, Go F*ck Yourself" with a huge U and a C paw, would be something I'd chip in on. That's the angle we should take. Not trying to stop this game, but take advantage of the comedy of the situation and embarrass Kerry Coombs, in his home town.

How about a billboard that reads "If you really want to get back at Ohio State, start buying UC season tickets for a change".

I was ticked when I initally heard this as well, but if people in town really want to "stick it to OSU" a more constructive response would be to finally support the program that plays here. There are people in this city calling up radio stations, posting on message boards, b+tching to their neighbors who haven't been to a UC football game in years. Where were they when UC played UCONN last December? Where were they when UC played Louisville and WVU at PBS last season?

I really like seeing people rallying around the home team, but they need to do it in a constructive manner if they really want to do something about.

Excellent post. I live in Louisville and every year UK plays bb at the Yum center, but as you referred to, UL fills it for their games so there is very little flak.

We can't control what OSU does, all we can control is what we do and I have seen this program grow significantly in recent years, so just keep spreading the word and keep winning and we will be okay.

The posts here are talking about 2 different things......UC's attendance issues and OSU's in your face discussion of a spring game at Paul Brown. Yes, UC needs to fill its stadium on a regular basis. And encouraging people to do so is good. We should all be ambassadors of the program and do all we can to get friends, neighbors and co-workers to go to the games WITH us.
However, even if UC filled Nippert every saturday, it would have NO impact on the issue at hand here.....OSU's in your face actions to UC's football program. Heck, if UC filled Nippert every saturday it would encourage OSU even more to want to do what they are proposing. OSU does not want to lose its domination in the state. That is why they are proposing this......to overshadow UC in UC's backyard. UC's program under CBJ is a rising program and Meyer sees that and wants to put his thumb on it. Anything UC can do, short of preventing the game, it should do, to let Meyer and Gene Smith know that UC will not let Cincinnati become unchallenged OSU territory.
If I was the AD at UC and Mike Brown allowed this, I would make certain he knew that UC is not amused and it would affect future uses of Paul Brown by UC. In fact, I would ask that Brown only lease Paul Brown to OSU on the condition that it is a two-for......one OSU spring game and and one UC-OSU matchup there. As well, as the AD, if Mike Brown does it anyway, I would use that week prior to the game and gameday to flood the media with OSU's fear of playing UC in Cincy. Make OSU's media splash one that turns on them in Cincy. There are plenty of ways for UC to skin that cat and not allow OSU to get the media victory it desires with having their spring game in Paul Brown.

The only time UK has played at the Yum Center has been against UL or in the NCAA tournament.

This is correct, however they did play at freedom hall last year. If I'm not mistaken that'd be like osu playing in the armory.
