Schedule Filling in?

  • Any chance with the West Virginia situation now resolved we look to add one of the new conference members for a game next year? Any thoughts on that?

    • I would like UCF or Memphis. It would probably be less expensive to buy out a CUSA team early than to have all 7 BE teams find someone OOC.

      • I really have a hard time with the fact that the Big East gave up so easily if there was no team set to replace WVU next year.

        • Perdrim, that's kinda how it looks...

I trust Whit. It'll be OK.

But I still say it shouldn't be too great a leap of logic to be on the phone with Florida State and see if something couldn't be worked out. FSU has an open home date, WVU would've been a road date for us.

ASSUMING (always a dangerous word) there isn't another team coming into the conference as an in-conference opponent...and there is NO indication that this is going to happen at this point, then it is every team for it's self. Florida State is a marquee matchup and given that it was a road-date that is opened up by WVU's departure, it'd be a heckuva game for us to get. The other open date could be filled either by a lower-class opponent (even if it had to be a 2nd FCS opponent) or by the in-coming conference mate if that develops.

FWIW, I am guessing...and it is a pure guess, just based upon timing...that if there is going to be a team that comes in to take the conference opening, it's probably Memphis and NOT Boise State. Boise State already announced that "it is too late" for them to join in 2012 (before the Memphis announcement) and it likely will cost less to get Memphis buyed out from CUSA than BSU from the MWC. If it is Memphis, picking up Florida State would compensate the strength of schedule for a very weak Memphis team.

But Whit knows what the heck he's doing. I trust him.

          • Jerry, you really want this transitioning UC team to play at FSU on Sept 8th ? Really ? RU NUTS ? We already have VT and Toledo on the road along with our BE schedule. We need another home game, not some suicide mission in Tallahassee. ( although the $ would be nice ) .
I believe I'm right that Memphis is buying itself out of C-USA immediately costing them $ 5M. I expect that if in fact that is true, they will rearrange whatever dates necessary to pick up WVU's BE dates. We'll see.
BTW, there are other D-1 teams with holes in their schedules like Nevada which would be a better get for us.

            • I would love to play FSU. Can't be one of the big boys if you won't play em in my opinion.

              • I don't want to play FSU for the simple reason that they will be unwilling to return the game.

But, I'm not all that afraid of them beating us. This isn't Florida State circa 1995 we're talking about.

                • I agree BJ, I also would want a return game. Seeing the position we are in at this point for next year, we obviously don't have much weight to throw around.

                  • I would...in this one case... not be upset for a "one-and-done" deal with Florida State. In this ONE case.

Second... IF, and this is a huge IF, it is a matter of swapping out a trip to Morgantown with a trip to Tallahassee... Yup. I may be crazy, but what the heck? You're talking about replacing a road trip to a potential Top 15 team (in WVU) to a road trip to another potential Top 15 (in Florida State). It's basically a push. Now I know the timing isn't so good, but then again sometimes you've just got to suck it up and do it.

Third... IF Boise State comes in and plays even a partial conference schedule (and UC is one of those teams), THEN you walk away from Florida State and schedule whoever you can, BECAUSE Boise State is another potential Top 25 opponent. BUT IF the opponent is Memphis, you almost HAVE to take a Florida State just to counter-act the weakness of the schedule.

Finally... Who the heck am I besides a fan. I'm not the AD, I'm not anybody. So my oppinion is worth exactly...nothing. But it is my oppinion...

Once again - as an elder Bearcat - I am thrilled to have Memphis in the Big East. If they can find a way to fill the schedule slots of WVU - all the more praise and honor to the Tigers. What a great experience the Liberty Bowl was - what a neat thing that it helps bring Memphis back into the circle of UC rivals.

I agree completely. I have family who teach at Memphis and the school is great. I'm really glad they joined the Big East. I have confidence their football team will play better and I can't wait to see UC play Memphis in basketball. Memphis is a great city and the school will bring a ton to the Big East.

Jerry, maybe it would be acceptable, as long as FSU gives us a MAJOR crapload of money. It's not like they're not desperate to find a game too.
