Tommy Tuberville New Head Coach

  • Gotta weigh in here. Came over from the Auburn board to see the reaction to Tuberville's hiring. I think you guys are getting a very good football coach. I was a huge fan during his stint at AU. He was at one time thought to be one of the very best recruiters out there. BTW, one of the few, if not the only, coaches with a winning record head-to-head against Saban. That said, there is no way Petrino comes as OC. He is the one AU came after to replace Tuberville at AU when a certain contingent (now gone) was trying to replace him in 2003. Tubs followed that up by going 13-0 the next season with 4 first round NFL draft choices. Finished third that year but got scr---d by the BCS when USC thrashed OU for the Natl championship.I believe AU would have beaten USC.

Great hire. War Damn Eagle and Go Bearcats.

  • This is what having a top flight AD with top 10 pedigree will do for you. Whit knew Tubs at Auburn and in the B12 whilst Whit was at Mizzou. Whit's Rolodex is major league. Thomas' s was AA.

I think he runs whatever offense his OC runs. TT was throwing the ball all over the lot under CTT, just like they did under Mike Leach.

  • At AU he ran a very balanced offense. We always had a very strong running game with backs like Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown and many more like them. But his QBs also put the ball in the air when they needed to and were very successful there too. The main thing is we rarely got beat at the line of scrimmage. That was true on both sides of the ball. A large reason for that was we had Kevin Yoxall as S&C coach. He and Tubs are reportedly very close. Yox got released in last couple of days in our coaching changes and my guess is he ends up with y'all. If so, he's a real good one. Your guys will be stronger and tougher because of him.

  • One of the bigger things I worried about losing Butch was getting a replacement who was on par with his recruiting abilities. I think Tuberville definitely fits the bill.

He was an assistant at the U during their major run (won three national titles while he was on staff from 1986-1993).

His first job after ascending to D-Coordinator at Miami was at Ole Miss. Wikipedia says they nicknamed him the riverboat gambler for his aggressive play-calling particularly on 4th down.

I also found this anecdoate funny given the coaching carousel this time of year...

While at Mississippi Tuberville made the statement, "They’ll have to carry me out of here in a pine box," in reference to not leaving to coach at another school. Two days after he made that statement, it was announced that he was departing for Auburn.

While at Auburn he took them to 8 straight bowls including 5 New Years Eve bowls.

In 2005, despite losing the entire starting backfield from the unbeaten 2004 team to the first round of the NFL Draft, Tuberville led Auburn to a 9–3 record, finishing the regular season with victories over rivals Georgia and Alabama.

Under Tuberville, Auburn had a winning record against its biggest rival, Alabama (7–3), and was tied with its next two most significant rivals, Georgia (5–5) and LSU (5–5). He led Auburn to 6 straight victories over in-state rival Alabama, the longest win streak in this rivalry since 1982, which was the year Auburn broke Alabama's 9-year winning streak.

He won 9 of 15 games against top 10 opponents while at Auburn.

    5-2 versus top 5 teams.

coached 19 players who were selected in the NFL draft, including four first round picks in 2004

  • I also didn't realize Chizik was an assistant under him at Auburn. I wonder if he'd be up for a coordinator spot although is he under investigation still?

One other thing I havent seen mentioned is this...

In 2012 Tuberville and John Stroud, partners in investment firm TS Capital Partners LLC, were sued by seven plaintiffs in United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama for alleged failure to file tax returns and for falsifying documents and co-mingling investors' funds during Tuberville's time at Auburn University. Through attorney at law Vic Hayslip of Birmingham, Alabama, Tuberville denied the allegations and promised to defend "vigorously" against them.[6]

I'm sure the university knew and i'm sure its no big deal.

  • Another Auburn Tiger here. Y'all are lucky to have Whit, he and Kelly are personal friends of my family and lived next door in Auburn. Whit is sharp as a tack, not gonna slide much by Him. Tub is a personal friend also. He is quick witted, a little sharp with the tongue, but as down to earth as any head coach has ever been. Oh yea, he is a stud football coach. The man knows how to run a program. Tubb, Whit, my brother and myself flew the Auburn Jet up several years ago to Akron and played beautiful Firestone GC. South Course. It was Awesome. Beautiful fir trees lining fairways. Congrats on a top 10 hire! Better show Whit some Love!

The #16 scoring, #2 passing, #7 passing efficiency offense in the nation. They throw the ball all over the lot.

Brendon Kay must be salivating for a 6th year big-time right now.

That's what we need to get fannies-in-the-stands. Great get Whit!! He's a great recruiter too! My brother who lives in Alabama called to say we got a great coach. He felt the reason he left the Alburn was the fans and boosters were on him so bad because he couldn't Alabama once Nick got there. I love this hire. Go Cats!!

  • Tuberville can coach, but this is almost more about the hype needed to pay for the new stadium improvements. Chuck Martin, while a great coach, would not have inspired the same amount of enthusiasm.

Great hire in so many ways. Even if he goes 8-5 every year.

  • Chizik should get all the credit in the world for binging home the 2010 Natl Championship. He really should. Sure, he had Cam and Nick Fairley. He also had 20 something seniors that were recruited under Tubs (and Chizik). But he's probably a good example of a very good cordinator that should have stayed as one. Not sure his ego would let him step down to DC again (right now) but he was a very good one for us and was responsible for the defense on our 2003 undefeated team and on the 2004 defense of undefeated Texas when thay won the BCS NC. That means he went 27 straight games undefeated in the SEC and Big 12. This man can coach defense. He's got a huge buyout from AU so I'm guessing he may take a season off to put the AU divorce further in the background and regroup. But he'll be coaching somewhere again.

As for the legal and tax issues....I think Tuberville was dropped from these actions.

I don't think any charges were filed. The man was 87 years old and was in frail health.
