Two Good Seasons

  • IMO UC had a great year in football and basketball. Frankly I am conflicted in that the Liberty Bowl win left me and I believe others with a warm glow from the year. Alternately I think many do not have that glow from basketball due to the loss to OSU. If we simply focus on the wins over Syracuse, Texas and Florida State at the end of the year one could say the quality of basketball wins was stunning.

We had a great year. Neither team was going to win a national championship - but ending with a win seems to be a plus.

    On to the spring game.

  • People have that feeling after the basketball game it just takes a few days for it to wear off. It's similar to the UC season ending in the Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech, it was special and people knew it was, you can't just ask people to jump around excited two days after a tough loss.

Only one team in the NCAA tournament can end the season with a win. People need to recognize this has been perhaps the greatest year ever when you factor in the results of the football and men's basketballl team.

    Cincinnati fans should be glowing.

  • Top 25 football team, four of the past five years.

    Sweet 16 basketball team.

And - the best part - we've done it as members of the Big East! Not the Big Ten... Not the Big 12... Not the (insert another conference name here)...

Time for people to start being happy with what we've done, and stop being negative, particularly about situations well beyond our control.

Yep. To quote a famous movie line, "This town needs an enema".* The UC fan base needs one as well. Smile and be proud of your school Bearcat fans.

  • I am VERY happy with this season....

The difference between the FB and BB worlds right now is, of course, that in FB you can win your bowl game and go exit the season on a winning note while in BB, unless you win the whole enchilada, you're going to finish with a loss...

Overall, I feel more like after the Sugar Bowl (Florida) game. We were really outmatched in that game. Yeah, I wish we had beaten OSU, but they were just a better team than us. The Sugar Bowl was kind of the same thing, where Florida was just a better team in almost every facet of the game. We played hard, but that game was just beyond us.

The Orange against Virginia Tech on the other hand, we could've won. That one still really stings for me because it wasn't that we were incapable of winning the game but that we really didn't play (outside the first drive) up to our potential. We could've... hell, we should've... been right there with VT at the end.

But back to the original point... Yep. Pretty good year all around. Here's to the future!

    Yep.

And running into a team that is better than you is not necessarily a sign of weakness. Even teams in "Big Boy Conferences" run into a buzz-saw from time to time. People like to make wise-cracks about the Surgar Bowl and how ridiculous it was for UC to get pummeled by Florida. What they forget is that Florida team had most of their team back in 2008 who had just won the national championship. They were 12-1 and quite frankly would have embarrassed just about anyone not named Alabama that year.

I agree with you about the VT game too. Tony Pike threw four picks that night, and UC was still in the game until he got stopped short on the 1 yard line (twice) with five minutes to go. You can't turn the ball over like that and expect to win but UC almost pulled it off.

  • Don't worry next year we win them all in football and in basketball we go to the Elite 8.

My memory from the Orange Bowl was that the VT DBs were quicker than anything we had seen that year. Additionally the inability to score from short yardage IMO has plauged the spread offense as long as we have played it. I would like to see us use some under center plays for short yardage.

What I remember was VT's Tyrod taylor running out from behind the line of scrimmage, and UC's defense ending up being in a freaking track meet trying to run him down...KILLED US!

What the key to beating them at fedex field this year will be: Trying to contain, and bring down their monster QB..Keys are UC's front 4, and LB corp. We will need to get really physical up on the defensive front if we want any chance of winning this game!

  • For as bad as the fight was, Bearcat fans should be happy that the team made it to the Sweet 16. From that moment on everything went best case scenario.

UC beating Louisville a Final Four team and Syracuse an Elite 8 team, both at home. It should give fans a great perspective of their influence in home court advantage.

But Cincy is a town who supports the Bengals. We're gluttons for punishment.

  • Clifton... I am a poker player. I remember one time I was sitting on a really sweet hand (a nice full house with Jacks over Tens) and getting beat by 4-of-a-kind (Queens no less...). It really didn't hurt so bad because it was a heckuva hand.

That's what I remember about the Sugar Bowl. That Florida team was just sick. When you watched them on the field, their players were noticeably larger than our guys across the board, they were fast, they were well coached, etc... And, FWIW, we still scored what...24??? 28???... some sort of "respectable" ammount on them and we just got beat. That's just life sometimes. Not to mention all the turmoil around our coaching situation... Florida, that year, was just better than UC was. UC had the full house, Florida had the four queens. I don't mind that one bit.

Likewise, Ohio State showed their full potential in that when we pulled even with them, they just pulled away at will. They just plain beat us. It wasn't a "whoopin," they were just the better team. It takes nothing away from what the guys did this year. Sullinger especially showed that he is a master on the court. Could the guys have played "better"? Well, sure... You can say that most days. Would it have made a difference in the outcome? This year, I don't think so.

Congrats to OSU on the win and making it to the Final Four. But moreso, congratulations to Mick and the Bearcats on a great season and a job well done. I'll worry about next year...well, next year. Right now, I'm just happy with how things went this season.

(For the record, I'm pulling for the Cards now... It would be HUGE for the BE to pull in a second consecutive NCAA Men's Championship... Even though, if they win all the speculation of UL to the B12 will shift into high gear... But that will happen anyways...)
