Cronin a Hot Commodity

  • I have been told by multiple sources that N.C. State, Oklahoma and a third school have all been in contact with Cronin's agent. I am also told that Cronin is seriously considering leaving Cincinnati because of how long it is taking Mike Thomas to get a contract extension completed.

According to our sources there appears to be no sense of urgency from the UC administration and that the apparent lack of urgency is playing a factor in Cronin's willingness to listen to and possibly leave Cincinnati for another school. Our sources also state that Cronin does not want to leave Cincinnati and that he wants to be here for a long time but Cronin is starting to think that maybe UC does not want the same thing as he does.

Sounds like things have really heated up over the last 24/48 hours and there is some sense that Cronin could be gone by as early as next week.

  • If that happens I think the program will be down for an extended period of time. If we cant keep one of our own who has done one of the best rebuilding jobs in the last 15 years then we will not attract any successful long term candidates.

Guess I will stick to rooting for the Hogs and Mike Anderson since that administration seems hell bent on winning.

  • Good riddance - let's be honest if they didn't beat Mizzu he would have been gone. The body of his work doesn't deserve a long term deal in my opinion.

  • Really? You are a tad delusional if you think he was gone with a loss to Mizzou. I really don't want to see him go and think that both parties would be worse off for him leaving with only his check book having a short term benefit.

Wow. Pure ignorance at its finest.

  • As a Bearcat fan you are crazy if you don't realize how horribly damaging Coach Cronin leaving right now would be to the Bearcats basketball program, and I would suggest contacting the AD to make it clear that we need to keep one of our own. Now having said that, IF Coach Cronin were actually to leave right now he would really go down as quite the disloyal chap to say the least considering that this is his alma mater and self described "dream job". One NCAA tourney appearance where I truly believe that many of the fans have started to wake up from their slumber now and not even had a chance to catch our breath after a nice season does NOT warrant this type of ratcheting up of this stuff at this time. I don't doubt that things aren't perfect here right now, and I would largely agree with much of what is being said. BUT are you a Bearcat or not? Here is hope that he is a Bearcat and that they get an extension done now.

  • I've been lied to by so many UC coaches I've grown numb to it. BK wanted to stay, really he did. This was cronin's dream job, dantraitor didn't sleep with a msu blanket every night. What bullshit. Right now is why very few fans emotionally invest in this program. 5 long years to get to now and one tournament win and he wants a contract redone in 5 days. I'm no fan of MT and think he should be let go if we lose another coach AND can't fundraise, but somehow I doubt if we take a step back next year Mick will refund part of the raise.

4,400 UCAT members. UL have 10k. Why haven't you joined? $50 minimum to start. Membership matters.

  • This is disturbing coming from a hometown guy who professed to have his dream job here at UC. He has one tournament win in 5 years and now it seems like he is ready to jump ship because there are other schools calling now. Where were these schools the previous years, yet UC stuck by him? I would think hometown loyalty and a "dream job" would buy the school at least one year. Lord knows there will be plenty of other coaching opportunites that open up after next year if he doesn't like the situation here next year. I was always in the camp that Mick needed to be here next year regardless due to the kids leaving and class coming in. What Todd is talking about happening (the fallout) were he to leave would absolutely crush the team and program for another 5 years. I understand the need for a bigger budget and Mick wanting to build a national contender, but by waiting until next year at the earliest, if he so chose, he could leave the program in a much better state than leaving this year.

Separate from the other discussions we've been having here, I have to say that, if true, this does not speak well of Mick at all. The administration invested plenty of patience waiting for Mick to get the job done. He ought to show the same consideration.

Mick would also have to know what a blow it would be if he left at this moment. I believe he truly cares about this program, and if he does, there's no way you can in good conscience make a move that would decimate the program.

The Final Four is next weekend, meaning the basketball coaches convention, so I suppose if he is looking to leverage his current position of strength, it means pushing hard between now and then.

Agree, I was never one who thought that Cronin taking an assistant coaching job with Pitino was anything but a smart coaching move to learn from one of the accomplished coaches. But leaving at this particular moment from your own school would be definite cause for criticism.

  • I am sure that when Cronin first took his "dream job" he didn't anticipate the level of him versus everybody else he would encounter. He's been crapped on since he's been here. I wouldn't blame him for leaving to go somewhere where he can make more money and feel like he's wanted. The future is bright for UC basketball for the first time in a long time. The school would be making a strong statement that they are not committed to basketball if they let him leave.
