Gates vs. Sullinger

  • I really think this is the matchup of the game. I can't wait to see these two go at it. I've really wanted to see Yancy and Sullinger go at it. This could also vault Yancy way up on the draft boards. From what I've seen so far, Yancy is likely to be a late second round pick. Sullinger is seen as a lottery pick. Yancy hasn't really played any elite centers this year and now he'll have his shot on the main stage. I really think this matchup is going to be fun to watch.

  • I agree, should be a great matchup. Is Yancy about an inch or two taller? Yancy has the girth to not be backed in, but Sullinger may have a quickness advantage. I think Yancy can be effective especially on the offensive end if we can pass him the ball.

  • IMO Yancy's a bit of teddy bear. He needs to get a little mad & possessed ( but stay in control ) to play his best. He's developed a nice little 10 ft jumper that he's hit with some regularity lately and he's been a monster going to the two hand slam, and terrific at the line. The incremental confidence he's showing is a wonderful development in progress. He and his family should be very proud.

    Yancy and this Bearcat team would be a terrific script for a great story. ( and perhaps divine intervention will say it's not over. )

    This is truly the key to the game. Can Yancy cover Sullinger without help and without fouling? If so, it makes our defense that much stronger. It will be a big test for Yancy and will impact his draft status.

  • This matchup is huge. If Yancy gets in foul trouble the Bearcats really don't have anyone who can even slow Sullinger down. If Yancy is motivated like he used to be to play Luke Harangody, I think UC will give OSU all they can handle and more. I'm just worried about the guys in stripes trying to control the game by blowing their whistles early. Cheap fouls are not good especially early.

  • I agree this matchup is huge but think cash vs craft is of equal importance. Craft is nasty on defense and controls there team similar to cash. If craft takes cash out of the game we are in trouble.

    To me, Parker vs Thomas and Cash vs Craft are the two most important match ups. Sullinger is great, but Yancy is an elite post defender. We aren't nearly as vulnerable there as we are against Thomas. In fact, I think there is a good chance Thomas will force us to play zone. If that's the case, we are going to make sure we rebound out of it. We aren't a great defensive rebounding team.

  • Maybe we should start JJ and have him cover Sully. He's going to get a whistle in the first 30 seconds he's on the court anyway; might as well be in a situation where he stops the other JJ from scoring, and save an early foul on Yancy.shrug

    I agree with your analysis.

    I think Parker has an opportunity to have a big game. From what I have seen this season, Thomas is not a strong defensive player. Thomas might get his point, but he might very well give up as many points as well. I know it is cliche, but Parker plays a lot bigger than his stated height, particlarly on defense and getting some rebounds.

    Like the rest of us, I would like to see Cash get hot shooting the basketball on Thursday night.

  • My biggest worry about the Sullinger v. Gates matchup is the high pick and roll. OSU has multiple players who can run it they basically run 4 out, 1 in) and Gates at times can get lost in it and we have to depend on rotation. I think Gates can defend Sullinger 1-1 without fouling, so long as the refs don't give Sullinger some bailouts.

    The Craft v. Cash matchup should be really good, and Parker v. Thomas as well. These are all keys to the game, but I do think UC can do well in all of them.

    Spot on. Yancy is greatly underrated as a post defender. His first two years, he was a foul waiting to happen. He has become so much better at maintaining position without resorting to fouling.

    Sullinger went out and shot two early 3s against Gonzaga's Sacre. If that's going to be the plan again, we will go to zone. We won't have Yancy chasing Sullinger outside of the paint.

    I see the pivotal matchup in this game as being Parker vs. Thomas. OSU does not have a shot-blocking threat to guard the rim, and Parker is our first-choice guy to take advantage of that. If he can be smart doing that, too, then Thomas is much less of a scoring threat when he's sitting on the bench in foul trouble. That one comes down to heart and strength for Parker vs. great young talent for Thomas. If that battle goes decisively one way or another, I like that team's chances.

    I'm right there with you on the Parker v. Thomas match up.

    I believe Yancy can guard Sullinger 1 on 1. Will Sullinger score? Yes of course but I think Yancy can make it really tough on him. My biggest worry is Yancy usually takes mental breaks and Sullinger rarely does. Sullinger will not get deterred from attacking Yancy no matter how many times Yancy shuts him down.

    However, on the other end Yancy can easily score over Sullinger the only thing is getting positioning. Sullinger is very intelligent and understands the importance of good position. Yancy is still lackadaisical in that area and doesn't always fight for good position.

    I'm really all over the board on this match up. I know what Sullinger will bring, I just don't know what Yancy will bring to each game.

    Thomas does not disappear on the offensive end. If the ball is in his hands he is going to try to score no matter how many shots he's missed or who has shut him down.

    Making him play defense will be a big key.

    I'm going off if my OSU guy. Buford is the one who keeps shooting no mayter what, while Thomas can sulk. Again, just what I'm hearing from a guy who watches all their games.

  • I'm assuming they let them play...it's the ncaa tourney and it's Big 10 vs Big East. Anything less will be crap.

    Gates/Sullinger

    As stated...these are the three big matchups we are all waiting to see...

    other thoughts;

    OSU is not a good passing team...UC is deadly in deflecting/stealing....OSU tries to get fancy on interior passing and we will steal it away and it's fast break the other way.

    I'm concerned about UC vs Pick and roll....we have not done a good job this year defending this.

    Also...Gates has to stay on Sullinger, the man can stray our and pop a three every now and then. Also...Sullinger is relentless, Gates has to be ready.

    I think Parker may be the Xman in all of this...needs another FSU performance.

    Finally: SK needs to go off again....and it would help if Dixon/Parker/Cash could all drain some open three's and really loosen it up inside for Gates and guards attacking the rim. If we can hit some three's OSu won't know what to do once we start attacking from all directions.

    If we can't hit three's and OSu is hitting them, will be a long night.
