kelvin is fast and has great jumping ability. he just doesn't have basketball instints and acumen. its hard to reconcile those together, and as a result hes probably one of the most athletic bigs in the country who looks manges to look awkward and uncoordinated half the time he is out there. for a player like him, the only way he is going to improve his instincts and acumenis by getting game action. he will be a player who will be tough to watch sometimes and will also wow us sometimes- and hopefully a year from now he is able to give consistent minutes.

I'm sure Chad can answer this but if I remeber correctly didn't Kelvin only have like one or two years of organized basketball under his belt before he got to campus? I thought that was the reason for him redshirting but I could be wrong on that.

Regardless he matches up better than David against some opponents based on athleticism so it was good to see him contribute some solid minutes.

Feel a little guilty for being cynical but I also read this and thought it hinted that that we aren't going to sign another big.

Although I do agree that Gaines has all the athleticism and he is definitely improving.

They are far from the same player, but former basketball strength coach Dave Andrews once told me Kelvin's "quick twitch" muscles are similar to Kenyon Martin. If you watch his blocks, his explosiveness is there and he is improving. Now, if we can only find a rugged inside scoring presence who goes to the hole with the sole intent of ripping someone's head off....
