New column: Shaq Thomas is Working and Waiting

Random UC practice observation ... Octavius Ellis is going to be REALLY good in a few years

Since this thread is all about hype, I'll throw my hype observation of the day out there:

Cash Wright this winter has become the best UC point guard since Nick Van Exel.

(Before the naysayers chime in with these points, I'll qualify it by saying I consider Steve Logan to have been a shooting guard and, while Kenny Satterfield was probably more talented, he didn't show enough of it during his brief stay at UC to earn the designation.)

I meant from an experience standpoint. However, it certainly wouldn't be a ridiculous thought. Again, it seemed like a lot/most on here thought Sanders would be an immediate impact player and was the best recruiting of the class which included Shaq. Now all of a sudden Shaq is way better than Sanders. The hype that gets built from sitting out is amazing.

For the style of basketball that we're playing right now Shaq is a better fit. Sanders has been the least impressive of the freshman thus far, with even JD3 outplaying him IMO. He just hasn't looked comfortable or confident so far. I'm sure that'll change, but he also seems to be the most physically limited recruit in terms of athleticism. Shaq was always thought to be the recruit with the highest ceiling, so I don't think that it's absurd for his hype to build up with people tracking him throughout the year.

  • My thoughts about some of these players:

I've liked Ellis' talent, but have been very concerned about his physicality. His upper body frame (on tv, at least) looked so thin to me that I wondered how much heavier and stronger he could get. Of course, getting taller helps, but he will need to get much stronger.

Shaq's shot has been my main concern ever since seeing brief film clips. If he can develop a consistent shot, he should be a lock at the 3, surpassing Sanders whose ability is limited.

SK at the 2 is a question mark to some degree: mediocre ball skills and quickness. He's really a tweener (between 2 and 3) to me. Of course, it depends on how Mick would use him at the 2, but his ball skills need to improve if he's to assume a different role than his present one.

Steve Logan was most definitely a PG, just didn't run it as much when Sat was there. His senior year he was an all american at the PG position.

No offense to Cash but I think Sat was better as well. Cash still has a year and a half left though.

Satt was miles ahead of Cash as a PG. There's not really even much to debate in regards to that.

Regardless of if Shaq starts or not, he's one of the few guys on this team that could be a super star. Personally, I don't care who starts and I'm certainly not going to try to predict how long it'll take Shaq to put it all together - but it shouldn't be thrown out of consideration.

i don't care who starts either. but the discussion originated as to whether or not shaq should be a starter right now. that is why it was debated.

    Good post.

I agree about sk. However, from the little I've seen and what is being reported Thomas has very good handles and solid quickness. So when cash is at the 1 sk is at the 2 and Thomas is at the 3 we will still have 2 guys who can handle and attack off the dribble.
